For my final submission I have chosen to further explore how selling security has adverse effects on our contemporary society. This paper will focus on gated communities to prove this phenomenon. Adverse effects are created because gated communities are marketed in a manner that promises to create and protect an individual’s identity but they do not deliver. In fact they perpetuate many of the issues we face as a society in late modernity. This means that gated communities are heavily linked to a lot of the key theories and concepts studied in this course. This includes ontological insecurity, vocabulary of motives, conspicuous consumption and politics of exclusion. All of these theories and concepts will be connected to gate communities in this blog and to illustrate these points the blog will draw on real world example of gated communities. The following video gives a quick introduction into life inside of a gated community.
